IAMGOLD commences build of largest solar project in Suriname

Rosebel Gold Mine N.V., an IAMGOLD facility, yesterday installed the first panel of what will become the largest solar project in Suriname.

The US$12-14 million, 5MW project is expected to be operational by August 2014. It is fully funded by Rosebel and will be used at the company’s  Brokopondo site, a grid-connected location.

The project aims to reduce energy costs but increase the energy supply to allow Rosebel to exploit harder rock deposits.  The PV project will also help the company to deliver on its commitments to minimize the impact of the company activities on the environment which include the generation of clean and sustainable electricity.

Ronald Halas, IAMGOLD’s Vice President Commercial, South America, stated at the installation: “The Rosebel Solar Energy Project is an excellent investment by Rosebel that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, provide additional power generating capacity in Suriname, and once again demonstrate the importance of the Brokpondo area for the generation of power in Suriname.“
