2nd African Mining and Renewables Summit Launched

2nd African Mining and Renewables Summit Launched

REMS Johannesburg logoMining operators across Africa are facing severe energy shortages and price hikes and are now actively exploring new solutions, including renewables, to power off-grid and grid-connected operations. In this environment, the relevancy and urgency for mining and renewables decision-makers to meet and understand the potential for addressing mining’s power crisis in Africa cannot be understated.

Energy and Mines is delighted to announce the next high-caliber Summit for mining and energy will take place on July 1-2 at the Hilton Johannesburg. Following the tremendous success of last year’s inaugural Renewables and Mining Summit & Exhibition in Johannesburg, this year’s event will have a more pan-African focus and bring together senior mining executives with operations in Southern, Western, Eastern and Central Africa with international renewable energy experts to discuss the sector’s power crisis and next steps.

Hatch is the Principal Sponsor of this Summit and NRG and Siemens are Main Sponsors. The Summit will examine the key topics around energy challenges for the African mining sector and the potential role for renewables in addressing the sector’s power crisis including:

  • Insight from senior mining leaders on strategic energy goals and operational realities
  • Renewables in addressing load shedding and power security for African mines
  • The business case and practicalities of hybrids for remote sites
  • Evolving energy strategies for junior and new mining operations
  • Developing finance solutions for renewables for mines
  • Integrating energy storage into power solutions for mines

Mike Rossouw, Executive Director, Xstrata Alloys and Energy Thought Leader, Eskom will provide the opening keynote at the Summit. Senior mining leaders from major mining houses and junior operations including De Beers, Gold Fields, Acacia Mining, Shanta Gold, Anglo American, Kalagadi Managanese, LontohCoal, Samancor Chrome, Exxaro, Anglo American Platinum, Kumba Iron Ore, Impala Platinum, and ArcelorMittal Saldanha are confirmed to present.
