Press Coverage of Energy and Mines World Congress

The Financial Post reports on Energy and Mines’ 4th Annual Renewables for Mining World Congress that took place in Toronto on Nov 21-22.

Excerpts from the article include:

Mining companies are digging into renewable energy as a way to reduce costs and offset the impact of volatile conventional fuel prices as the world shifts to a low-carbon economy.

Industry executives gathered last week at the Energy and Mines World Congress in Toronto focused on how innovation in energy – which can comprise as much as one-quarter of operating expenses in remote locations – can make mines more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable.

“I think we will be surprised at the speed at which mining companies will start to adopt these things,” said Adriaan Davidse, mining innovation leader at Deloitte.

Mining Journal also covered the event, reporting:

Amid fluctuating commodity prices, the recent Energy and Mines World Congress in Toronto looked at the role of renewables in mining as a means of driving down and controlling energy costs.

Newmont’s chief metallurgist Frank Roberto told Energy and Mines the dependence on traditional power sources slowed the transition to alternatives. “We’ll have to make those changes gradually and in a way that is cost-effective to our operations,” he said.

Deloitte’s mining innovation leader Adriaan Davidse said low conventional fuel prices in the current environment meant many companies were missing the opportunity to invest in technology to insulate them from future price hikes.
