Largest Solar Thermal Plant in North America Begins Operations at Mexican Peñoles’ Mine

The largest solar thermal plant in North America is now supplying power to Industrias Peñoles’ Milpillas copper mine in the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora, reports BNamericas. The project was installed by Denmark’s solar heating specialist Arcon-Sunmark.

The plant has a collector field of 6.270 m2 with a total capacity of 8,600MWh/y, according to Flemming Jørgensen, Site Manager and Representative of Arcon-Sunmark in Mexico. The solar thermal plant is projected to reduce the mine’s emissions by around 3,000 tons of CO2 per year.

Arcon-Sunmark has completed a similar project for Chile’s state owned copper miner Codelco — the Pampa Elvira Solar facility located in the Atacama desert.
