Cambridge Energy Installs Next-Gen Solar Tracker at Newmont’s Akyem Mine

Newmont Mining Corporation, one of the world’s largest gold producers, has deployed Cambridge Energy Partners’ (CEP) redeployable Nomad solar PV tracker in an effort generate lower-cost renewable electricity, and to offset energy demand, at its Akyem Mine. The Nomad’s prefabricated design features single-axis tracking technology and its 30 kW segments are both scalable and quick to install.  Able to be redeployed, the Nomad bypasses the “stranded asset” issue often associated with solar generation technology and its incremental installation options make it suitable for both small and large-scale projects.

Situated in the Birim North District of Eastern Ghana, the Akyem Mine produces around 473,000 ounces of gold annually. It is hoped that the addition of the Nomad solar PV tracker will play a significant role in Newmont’s stated aim of reducing carbon emissions while lowering energy consumption and costs.
