South Africa, Chile, and Australia have been highlighted as the top three leaders in the mining operations’ shift to renewables.
A new report published by the BMI Research stated that the remote mine locations in those regions have encouraged mining companies to adopt more of the available renewable energy options. Meanwhile, the shift in other countries like China, India and the US has been much slower.
“Indeed, energy costs can reach up to 40% for remotely located Chilean mines, where access to power grids is often unfeasible and relying on diesel is particularly expensive. Copper miner Codelco began investing in solar power several years ago, as did Anglo American and Glencore at the jointly owned Collahuasi copper mine,” BMI’s report stated as an example.
