Details on Alberta’s Coal Phase Out Plan Coming Before 2017

Canada’s resource-rich province Alberta will roll out details around its plan to promote renewable energy and end coal-fired electricity by 2030 as soon as this fall, says Premier Rachel Notley.

“We will set out more detail on how we will promote the construction of clean, renewable energy — wind, solar, thermal and hydropower — efficiently, economically and without undue subsidy,” Notley said during her annual state of the province speech.

Notley’s plan includes financial incentives for coal emitters, who will be closing down shop and adopting cleaner energy.

By 2030, her administration wants to have 30% of power generated by renewables and another 70% by natural gas. Also, the province will begin introduction of its broad-based carbon tax as soon as January.
