Credit: Primus PowerAnglo American Platinum has entered into an agreement with Primus Power to install eight EnergyPod battery systems at its Amandelbult mine in Limpopo, South Africa. Designed to be charged when the cost of grid electricity is low, the batteries, slated provide 200kW of power and 1,000 kWh of energy, will release stored energy to reduce the mine’s draw from the grid. Anglo American initially invested in Primus Power in 2014, and this latest agreement represents a further step in the long-running partnership between the two companies.
It is hoped that the successful use of these batteries will further demonstrate the durability and reliability of the EnergyPod system to South African electricity public utility Eskom, who are currently testing the technology at their large-scale energy storage test facility in Rosherville, Johannesburg.
