Top miner BHP quits world coal association over climate clash

BHP has severed ties with the World Coal Association (WCA) indicating they would reap little benefit from staying on as a member. Despite being among the world’s top emitters, BHP has committed to a target of net zero emissions from its operations in the second half of this century. BHP’s review of its membership of the WCA came after some investors voiced concerns over the producer’s membership of groups that have criticised the Paris climate accord and rejected targets to increase use of renewable energy sources. The company has said it will remain a member of the US Chamber of Commerce and will work with the Minerals Council of Australia to promote policies that are more in line with BHP’s sustainability goals.
