Lundin Mining contracts for 1100GWh of renewables annually

Canadian-based Lundin Mining Corporation has signed an 18-year contract with AES Gener to provide 1,100 GWh of renewable energy, per year, to its Candelaria Mine Complex in Chile. The contract, due to start in 2023, gives Minera Candelaria access to long-term renewable energy, resulting in decreased electricity costs and accelerating Lundin’s transition to a more sustainable mining operation.

AES Gener is expected to work alongside Minera Candelaria in an effort to optimize the Candelaria Mine Complex’s consumption of electricity, energy efficiency, energy storage, electromobility, self-generation, and relief projects.

Both AES Gener and Minera Candelaria have stated that the agreement represents a step forward in their respective sustainability programs, allowing AES Gener to make Chile’s electricity supply greener and more sustainable, while Minera Candelaria continues to reduce their environmental footprint and contribute to development and well-being of local communities in the Atacama region.
