Teck’s latest report highlights its actions on tackling climate change as well as the resilience of its product portfolio to climatic factors.
The company said it had a strong track record in controlling its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which it acknowledged were “significant.”
“Both our steelmaking coal and copper production are among the lowest carbon intensity in the world,” said Donald R. Lindsay President and Chief Executive Officer.
In 2018, 81% of the total electricity used by Teck was from renewable energy sources. Its current capacity of energy from alternate sources is 30.7 MW.
Teck’s proposed further actions on climate change include:
- 450,000-tonne GHG reduction goal by 2030
- Developing an updated Teck Sustainability Strategy and new GHG goals to announce in 2020
In a comforting message to stakeholders, Lindsay said Teck’s products played a critical part in the development of a low-carbon economy. “Whether it’s solar panels, wind turbines or electric cars, they all require metals, minerals and energy, and lots of it,” he said.
