Scatec Solar And Cambridge Energy Partners Tie Up For Portable Solar In Emerging Markets

Scatec Solar, a large Norwegian independent power producer, is launching an innovative service called “Release – by Scatec Solar,” offering low-cost and reliable solar power to companies operating in remote locations in emerging markets.

The new service will provide preassembled solar and battery equipment, from 1 to 20 MW capacity, on flexible leasing arrangements. Companies operating diesel-powered generators but looking for cost-effective and renewable energy will find this service attractive.

It is an innovative, preassembled, and containerized solution combined with a financial leasing model. Overall, it presents a very competitive case for small-scale solar power that is suitable for rapid deployment in difficult locations. An added advantage is the flexible contract duration offered by Release, made possible due to the ease of redeployment of the solar unit.

Preassembled bifacial solar panels will ship as a container-based solar tracker solution provided by the UK-based Cambridge Energy Partners (CEP). CEP’s Nomad solar tracker is pre-fabricated and available in modules of 15 kW each. A container can pack in 150kW, making its transportation cost-effective. Besides, units can be disassembled and then redeployed multiple times.

“The collaboration with Scatec Solar is an important step in CEP’s evolution, and puts us in position to become the leading manufacturer of movable solar solutions worldwide,” said Tom Miller, CEP’s CEO. “We remain optimistic of the potential to deploy solar in remote locations, and feel our Nomad solar tracker is uniquely placed to service this market.”

“Scatec Solar is renowned for financing, building and operating large-scale solar plants. Hence, offering smaller-scale plants that require a limited upfront investment for the customer is a natural step in expanding our emerging markets offering,” says Raymond Carlsen, CEO of Scatec Solar.

The offering includes a battery storage solution. Scatec has tied up with Tesla and DEIF for the supply of batteries.

CEP is expecting its tie-up with Scatec Solar to boost Nomad production volume to hundreds of Megawatts (MW) per year.

Scatec Solar is initially offering Release in Africa, in partnership with Norfund.
