BHP to Outline Roadmap for Cutting Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Kirsten Rose, BHP’s head of innovation, sustainable operations, will shed light on the miner’s ambitious plans to cut its greenhouse gas emissions to zero by the middle of the century. Ms. Rose will participate in a panel discussion on decarbonizing technologies at Resources Technology Showcase 2019 in Perth next week, according to The West Australian.

Investors have put pressure on BHP to unwind its membership of certain industry groups that lobby for policies that run counter to the miner’s stated commitments to limiting global climate change.

BHP will harness green hydrogen technology, contract power supply from renewable energy sources, and switch from diesel to electric vehicles in its drive to decarbonize.

These and other steps will help the mining company to realize its “bold goals” to slash Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions. In July this year BHP announced a US$400 million Climate Investment Program to cut its emissions.

“We’re also looking closely at what we call ‘decisions with long tails’ — the key decisions we make in the course of doing business that could have a significant impact on our ability to decarbonize, such as energy supply contracts, fleet replacement or decisions around energy generation,” said Ms. Rose.
