Australian miners commit to carbon neutrality

Two recent announcements highlight how innovative miners are harnessing technologies associated with renewables, energy storage, hydrogen and electrification to reduce their climate impact.

Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) yesterday committed to net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, with an interim target (via a “decarbonization pathway”) of a 26% operational emissions reduction from current levels by 2030.

“Mining is one of the most innovative industries in the world and Fortescue is harnessing this technology and capability to achieve carbon neutrality with a sense of urgency. In addition to the development of gas technology and renewables for our stationary energy requirements, we are working towards decarbonising our mobile fleet through the next phase of hydrogen and battery electric energy solutions,” explained CEO Elizabeth Gaines

In recent months Fortescue has started a number of innovative and ambitious decarbonisation projects including the Chichester Solar Gas Hybrid Project (60 MV PV, 60KM transmission line, 35 MW battery, plus a gas-fired power station with Alinta Energy) and the Pilbara Energy Connect project (150MW PV, 150MW Gas, 175KM transmission line).

Last month, cobalt-nickel-scandium producer Australian Mines Limited also announced plans to become carbon neutral by the end of 2020. In an interview published in Energy and Mines Magazine, Managing Director Benjamin Bell explained that net-zero emissions would be achieved through electrification, hydropower, solar and offsetting. “ We don’t want to be a company that sells into the EV market but doesn’t reflect the same values internally. “ outlines Bell in the June issue available here.

The use of alternative energy in mining is the key focus of the Energy and Mines Australia Summit which will be held virtually on August 4-6. FMGs Manager of Energy and Power, Bethwyn Coowcher will be discussing the mine’s renewables projects alongside 300+ miners and power experts. Full details of this exciting event here
