juwi AG will design, supply, and integrate a 36 MW solar farm and 7.5 MW battery energy storage system into the current diesel power plant at Centamin’s Sukari Gold Mine in Egypt.
juwi AG, a renewable energy specialist, has built more than 2,500 MW of wind projects and 3,100 megawatts of solar PV in over 25 countries since its founding in 1996. Giza Systems has been contracted for the installation of the Sukari solar plant.
The proposed off-grid system will use bifacial solar PV modules and single-axis tracking to maximize energy output. Further, juwi’s Hybrid IQmicro–grid technology will enable its integration into the mine’s existing energy infrastructure.
At an estimated cost of $37 million, the hybrid project at Sukari will be the largest of its kind globally at a mining location. Its capacity can be enhanced if needed.
It will cut on an annual basis the mine’s carbon emissions by 60,000 t CO2-e and consumption of diesel by 22 million liters.
The mine will therefore save US$9–13 million annually in the cost of fuel, lower exposure to the volatility in its price, and avoid handling logistics.
Centamin CEO Martin Horgan said the project would marry up the company’s environmental stewardship with its strategic objective of maximizing returns for all stakeholders.
