Caterpillar, the industrial machinery and locomotive giant that posted a turnover of nearly US$42 billion in 2020, will offer later this year designed-to-order generator sets that can run on 100% hydrogen including fully renewable green hydrogen.
Renewable hydrogen and hydrogen blends are among several alternative fuels customers are considering to achieve their sustainability goals.
Recognizing these imperatives, Caterpillar has built on its 35 years of experience with the use of high-hydrogen fuel in gas engines and gas turbines to develop reciprocating engine capabilities of up to 100% hydrogen.
Indeed, Caterpillar’s Solar® Turbines’ gas turbine generator sets have run on high hydrogen blends for decades and are capable of operating on 100% hydrogen today.
The company will soon also launch commercially available power generation solutions that can be configured to operate on natural gas blended with up to 25% hydrogen.
“Caterpillar continues to make investments aimed at improving the capability of hydrogen-powered solutions and replicating them across engine platforms as this fuel will likely play a role in customers’ plans for a reduced-carbon future,” the company said in a statement.
