Rachelle Doyle, hydrogen technology lead at Fortescue Future Industries (FFI), said the company was working to reduce the capital investment required for its renewable energy and green industry projects. Speaking at the Hydrogen and Mines virtual conference, Doyle said this would ensure FFI becomes the world’s lowest cost producer of renewable green hydrogen.
“We know renewable green hydrogen is the cleanest source of energy in the world, and that it has the potential to replace up to three-quarters of the global emissions if we improve this technology, and deploy it at scale,” Doyle said.
Initially focusing on green ammonia and liquid hydrogen, FFI is evaluating various technology options that would be implemented without financial recourse to parent Fortescue.
It has already identified projects in renewable energy, and green hydrogen aggregating an estimated 300 GW. At its Christmas Creek mine site, FFI is building a 1.5MW hydrogen electrolysis facility to power 10 coaches for workforce transportation.
“The demand for direct green electricity, green hydrogen and green ammonia could one day be as large as the fossil fuel industry,” Doyle remarked.
“Our vision is to make renewable green hydrogen the most globally traded stable commodity in the world,” she noted. “We see an exciting opportunity to participate in and be at the forefront of developing an export market for green hydrogen.”
