Teck Inks Deal With Caterpillar To Decarbonize Haul Trucks

Teck Resources Limited, one of Canada’s leading mining companies, will deploy 30 Caterpillar zero-emission large haul vehicles, including Cat 794 ultra-class trucks, at its mining sites beginning 2027. Teck announced Wednesday an agreement with Caterpillar Inc to develop, pilot and commence the operation of these trucks initially at the Elk Valley steelmaking coal operations in British Columbia, Canada.

Teck is committed to reducing the carbon intensity of its operations by 33% by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050.

The multi-phased plan would create one of Canada’s first zero-emissions large haul truck fleets with options for trolley-assist technology at Elk Valley, which is already powered by a 95% clean electricity grid.

“Decarbonizing our haul truck fleet is a critical step forward on our road to carbon neutrality and we are pleased to collaborate with Caterpillar to advance this work,” said Don Lindsay, President and CEO, Teck.

Caterpillar Group President Denise Johnson said the company expected to develop solutions to increase operational efficiency while substantially reducing emissions.
