BHP is partnering with bp to trial the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) to power mining equipment at its Yandi iron ore operations in Western Australia to reduce emissions from mining equipment. BHP aims to reduce its operational greenhouse gas emissions by at least 30% by FY2030, and 40% of its operational emissions in FY2020 came from diesel-powered equipment.
The renewable diesel made from HVO will be used in haul trucks and other mining equipment over a three-month trial period. The HVO is to be internationally certified as sourced from more sustainable feedstocks, such as waste products. BHP’s long-term goal is to have fully electric trucking fleets at its sites.
Meanwhile, bp is committed to becoming a net-zero company by 2050 and plans to increase its investment in low-carbon energy. Collaborating with companies like BHP helps bp to create solutions that meet the growing demand for lower-carbon fuels in sectors like mining and transport.
The use of alternative fuels like HVO may help BHP to reduce emissions while transitioning to electrification.
The collaboration between BHP and bp has the potential for wider application across BHP’s WAIO business and BHP’s operations globally.
