Rossing, Namibia’s Oldest Uranium Mine, To Construct 15MW AC Solar PV Plant

Rossing Uranium, Namibia’s oldest commercial uranium mine which commenced production in 1976, has unveiled plans for using renewable energy in its operations.

Namibia has been importing its electricity from African neighbors such as Zimbabwe and South Africa, who are themselves facing problems with energy generation. Rossing’s move is therefore aimed at achieving energy security.

The mine has announced its plans to build a 15MW AC Solar PV Plant and also invited bids from IPPs for the supply of 50,864 MWh per annum from renewable energy sources.

Rossing Uranium is majority-owned by China National Uranium Corporation which purchased its stake in 2019 from Rio Tinto.

Last month, Rossing’s board approved a Life of Mine Extension from 2026 to 2036.
