Barrick Gold Corporation’s sustainability strategy is centered on achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to the company’s 2022 Sustainability Report.
By using the SDGs as the central framework of its sustainability reporting, Barrick aims to link an integrated approach to sustainability management, avoiding siloed thinking and compliance-driven approaches.
On environment, in terms of SDG 13 (Climate Action) the company has in place a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target.
Its total emissions in 2022 were 6,705kt CO2e (Scope 1 and 2: market-based), representing a 6% reduction compared to the previous year and an 11% decline versus its 2018 baseline.
The report also shows that in 2022 Barrick:
- Generated over $10.7 billion in economic value,
- Created 21,000 jobs, and
- Invested more than $36 million in community development projects.
Barrick’s President and CEO, Mark Bristow, emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to sustainability management, stating that sustainability is instrumental in their continued drive to operate mines that are welcomed and respected as development partners worldwide.
