BHP And Codelco Ink Landmark Agreement For Joint Innovation In Sustainable Mining

BHP and Codelco, two of the world’s largest mining companies, have signed a collaboration agreement to share information and collaborate on sustainability initiatives. The agreement marks the first time the companies have worked together and will focus on areas of mutual interest such as the electrification of mining activities, supply of desalinated water, tailings deposits, and process decarbonization technologies.

The sharing of information will be in effect for five years, will be carried out by teams of professionals from both organizations, and overseen by a steering committee.

Open innovation is a key part of Codelco’s business strategy, with external capabilities from suppliers, research centers, universities, and companies being essential to complement the knowledge and experience of the state mining company and create sustainable solutions. For BHP, collaborative work between the public and private sectors is essential to make mining a more sustainable industry and address the urgent challenge of stopping climate change.

The objective of the partnership is also to tackle the primary challenges currently faced by both mining companies., including the development of technologies for low-grade mineral exploitation, operation in deep deposits with complex metallurgical conditions, and the deployment of advanced technologies in mining exploration activities.
