Caterpillar Launches The R2900 XE Diesel-Electric Underground LHD Loader

Caterpillar has launched the R2900 XE, the first diesel-electric underground load-haul-dump (LHD) loader. The R2900 XE has a higher payload of 18.5 tonnes and accelerates from 0-24km/h in 6.4 seconds, 52% faster than its predecessor, the R2900G.

The LHD loader’s redesigned buckets are available in four sizes, offering an optimised balance between productivity and bucket life. The new machine also features a Cat C15 engine that offers a variety of emission reduction and aftertreatment options, including an EU Stage V/US EPA Tier 4 final configuration and diesel particulate filter.

The R2900 XE is equipped with a high-efficiency electric drive system with continuously variable speed control that delivers improved power and cycle times and helps to reduce fuel consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions and total cost of ownership.

The next-generation operator environment, built on the successful R1700 platform, incorporates the latest improvements in productivity, safety and comfort. The enclosed cab design of the vehicle offers a comfortable and fatigue-reducing environment for the operator by providing fresh, temperature-controlled air circulation through air conditioning. The ROPS/FOPS structures are securely mounted to the frame, which helps isolate the operator from vibrations, ensuring a smoother ride.

The cab also features two emergency exits, and the availability of rearview, forward-facing, and rear-facing side-view cameras helps enhance safety by improving visibility around the machine for both operators and other workers.
