Irish Entrepreneur Secures $54M Deal To Retrofit 8,500 Diesel Mining Trucks Into Electric Vehicles

Norman Crowley, an entrepreneur based in Cork, Ireland, has secured a deal with a global mining company to convert 8,500 diesel mining trucks into electric vehicles. The retrofitting will be carried out over the next three years, with a significant portion of the work taking place in the Republic of Ireland.

Cool Planet Group, Crowley’s company, will utilize a newly completed factory in Powerscourt, Co Wicklow, to perform some of the conversions. The contract is valued at approximately €50 million (US$54 million). Cool Planet Group is also exploring the possibility of another site in Ireland in collaboration with Enterprise Ireland, and some of the conversions will be conducted in Portugal.

The initial order for 8,500 trucks has already been secured, and Crowley expects additional orders in the future as over one million mining trucks will need to be converted to electric vehicles by 2030.

The company has successfully engineered a range of electric vehicles that not only eliminate the emission of diesel particulate matter (DPM), but also prioritize safety, according to Crowley. Furthermore, these vehicles are equipped with advanced collision avoidance systems, ensuring that incidents of running over pedestrians are prevented.

Cool Planet Group is also involved in providing new electric vehicles specifically designed for the mining industry.

Cool Planet Group primarily focuses on helping major companies reduce their carbon emissions as part of their core business.
