Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions, a leader in underground mining equipment, is expanding its load and haul offering with a new diesel-electric range of underground loaders and trucks. Sandvik has led underground mining equipment electrification for over four decades, and its diesel-electric range is meant to complement its battery-electric vehicle (BEV) equipment offerings.
According to Jari Söderlund, Product Management Director, Division Load and Haul, the company sees the future of underground mining as a combination of multiple technologies, with different solutions for varying customer needs.
Not all mines and applications can practically switch from diesel to battery-electric immediately. However, Sandvik’s new diesel-electric range will help customers achieve their productivity and sustainability goals by boosting productivity, reducing total cost of ownership, improving availability, and extending component lifetimes.
The equipment will also be automation compatible, and available with advanced Sandvik digital service solutions and remote monitoring services to improve productivity and safety while reducing total cost of ownership.
Sandvik first presented its new Toro™ diesel-electric truck demonstrator to customers during a technology workshop held in Turku, Finland, in 2022.
