Australian Mining Operator IGO Awards All-Electric Mine Study To ABB-Perenti Combine

ABB and mining services group Perenti have been awarded a contract by Australian mine operator IGO Ltd. to conduct an all-electric mine study for the Cosmos Nickel Project in Western Australia.

The collaboration aims to design the optimal electrification plan for the underground mine, covering aspects such as mine design optimization, fleet selection, power distribution, and electrical infrastructure design, electrification system and battery management, ESG and safety impact analysis, and cost modelling of both CAPEX and OPEX.

The study aligns with IGO’s commitment to sustainability and its goal of implementing a complete mine electrification solution at Cosmos by mid-2025.

Perenti’s mining expertise and ABB’s eMine™ framework for electrification and automation will be utilized in the project. This collaboration is part of ABB and Perenti’s joint efforts to support net-zero emissions targets in the mining industry.

The study represents a significant milestone in Perenti’s sustainability agenda and its focus on decarbonization and energy transition.

For ABB, the contract is an opportunity to advance its eMine™ approach and promote electric solutions for decarbonizing mining operations.
