Eldorado Gold Is The First Mining Company In Québec To Induct A 50-Ton Electric Truck

Eldorado Gold Quebec, operator of the Lamaque underground mine in Val-d’Or, Abitibi-Témiscamingue, has become the first mining company in Quebec to integrate an electric ore transport truck into its fleet. The Sandvik TH550B truck, with a capacity of 50 tons, will enhance production efficiency, prioritize worker safety, and contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets.

A second electric truck is planned for later in 2023. The incorporation of these electric trucks is in line with Eldorado Gold Quebec’s strategy to gradually transition its fleet of equipment to electric mode, and particularly, electrifying transportation in the underground ramp of Sigma-Lamaque.

The company collaborated closely with Sandvik to develop these advanced electric trucks, which are expected to significantly reduce GHG emissions at the Lamaque mine.

The mine is already known for its low emissions due to access to hydroelectricity and energy efficiency projects. The electric trucks will eliminate diesel consumption and operate solely on renewable electricity from Hydro-Québec, resulting in an estimated annual GHG emissions reduction of 1,700 tons of CO2.

Eldorado Gold Quebec remains committed to improving its environmental practices and contributing to the energy transition. The company aims to mitigate 30% of its Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 2030 compared to the 2020 baseline, representing approximately 65,000 tons of CO2.
