Komatsu Demos Upgraded EVX Battery Truck For GHG Alliance Members At Arizona Proving Grounds

Komatsu last month hosted a gathering of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Alliance at the Komatsu Arizona Proving Grounds. The purpose of the event was to share progress and knowledge gained since the showcase of the EVX battery-powered haul truck at MINExpo 2021.

Alliance members had the opportunity to observe advancements in battery performance, discuss regulatory progress, and learn about Komatsu’s plans to use their trolley system for dynamic charging of battery trucks. They witnessed the upgraded EVX truck running on battery power, static charging of the battery with the truck connected to the trolley line, and a run up the trolley line showcasing the charging process and increased speed.

The GHG Alliance consists of mining industry leaders working together to develop zero-emissions equipment solutions. The alliance aims to advance Komatsu’s power agnostic truck concept, which can run on various power sources such as diesel, batteries, and hydrogen fuel cells, with both static and dynamic charging capabilities.

The alliance has grown in membership and currently includes companies like Antofagasta Minerals, BHP, Boliden, Codelco, Freeport-McMoRan, Grupo Mexico, Kinross, Rio Tinto, and Teck.

Komatsu is committed to reducing CO2 emissions and aims to achieve a 50% reduction by 2030 compared to 2010 levels. The company also has the goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
