The recently released Global Resources Outlook from the United Nations Environment Programme has indicated that resource extraction now accounts for half of the world’s total global carbon emissions.
The pace of oil gas and mining extraction has tripled since the 1970s and, with the report indicating that the actions of extractive industries are also the cause of 90 percent of biodiversity loss and water stress, questions are being asked about what measures these industries are taking to improve their environmental credentials.
Research by NU-WIDER (the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research) and Australian academics have highlighted the difficulties faced by the mining industry when it comes to reforming their impact on the environment, from improper regulatory approaches to corporate governance challenges.
