In an effort to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from its operations, BHP is tendering for the world’s first liquefied natural gas-fuelled transport in order to move up to 27-million tonnes of the company’s iron-ore.

This tender represents BHP’s support of The International Maritime Organisation’s decision to impose lower limits on sulfur levels in marine fuels. The proposed LNG-fuelled transport would be used to move up to 10% of BHP’s iron ore.

The move to more sustainable shipping is part of BHP’s larger emphasis on influencing emissions reductions across the full life cycle of their products. You can read more about this groundbreaking tender and BHPs stewardship role HERE.
