Anglo American and ENGIE have agreed to develop and fuel the world’s largest hydrogen-powered mine haul truck.
They signed the agreement in London aboard the Energy Observer (pictured above), the world’s first fully-electric vessel powered exclusively by hydrogen and renewable energies. ENGIE is a leading global energy and energy services company.
In the collaboration, ENGIE will provide the hydrogen generation solutions and Anglo American the mining truck. It will be the first attempt to convert a truck of this size and load to hydrogen fuel, according to International Mining.
Operationally, the converted truck is likely to match or even improve on its original diesel version. However, the conversion will result in lower noise, cleaner air, and cheaper maintenance. The innovative truck will make ‘first motion’ in 2020, and then undergo testing and validation at Anglo American’s Mogalakwena platinum group metals mine in South Africa. If successful, the trucks will deploy at other Anglo American sites.
“This is part of our plan to create a smart energy mix that moves us closer towards our carbon and energy targets for 2030 and, ultimately, our vision of operating a carbon-neutral mine,” said Tony O’Neill, Technical Director of Anglo American.
“The solution aims to help decarbonize the mining sector,” said Michele Azalbert, CEO of ENGIE’s hydrogen business.
