New Project: Galena Mining And Contract Power Group Enter Hybrid PPA For Abra Base Metals Project

Contract Power Australia Pty Ltd will build, own and operate an integrated hybrid power generation facility at the Abra Base Metals Project majority-owned by Galena Mining Ltd.

The low-emissions, cost-effective power facility will comprise a 10MW natural gas-fired power station, a 6MW solar array, 2MW of battery energy storage, and a 900Kl LNG storage and regasification facility. Abra will purchase the power generated under a PPA with an initial term of 16 years, which is extendable.

“Integrating solar with relatively clean natural gas instead of diesel achieves a marked reduction in Abra’s carbon footprint compared to alternatives considered in the tender process,” said Alex Molyneux, Managing Director, Galena Mining (pictured above). “Pleasingly, the design also offered the most cost-effective solution, in-line with our Feasibility Study estimates.”

Established in 1991, Western Australia-based Contract Power designs and constructs diesel, gas, and renewable power stations. It operates in the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) power market for remote mines and townships and also executes EPC projects. Pacific Energy Australia purchased Contract Power Group in 2018.

“Contract Power’s combined LNG and renewables integration capability has allowed our design team to maximize solar penetration as high as the economics and technology allows, providing the Abra project with the highest reliability and lowest cost of power on an unsubsidized basis,” said Contract Power’s Managing Director, Mr. Leon Hodges.
