South Australia plans to establish a groundbreaking Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act to simplify regulations and promote investment in large-scale hydrogen and renewable energy projects.
The Act aims to streamline processes, ensure secure land access, prioritize environmental benefits, and involve First Nations people in the transformation.
It will consolidate existing acts into a single regulatory framework, covering the entire project lifecycle. The government will identify suitable land and water areas for renewable energy projects, and companies will compete for licenses to access them.
The Act is currently under consultation and seeks to attract investors by creating a favorable business environment for renewable and hydrogen projects, leveraging South Australia’s global leadership in decarbonization.
“This world-first Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act will establish an orderly, fit for purpose system to ensure that developments are assisted by a ‘one window to government’ approach,” said Premier Peter Malinauskas during his speech to the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam. “In just over 15 years, our state has transformed its energy source from 1 per cent to more than 70 per cent renewable energy. Now we need to take the next step to increase our renewable share even further.”
