Arcon-Sunmark, Denmark’s large-scale solar heating specialist, has completed a new 5.1 MW (peak) solar heating plant at the Peñoles’ La Parreña copper mine in Mexico.
The plant has a collector field of 6.270 m2 with a total of 456 collectors. It also has a 660 m3 storage tank for storing surplus heat.
The new project will help the mine cover up to 58% of its annual heating demand and eventually lead to a significant reduction in energy costs and CO2 emissions.
The copper mine will become an example for others to follow, says International Sales Director of Arcon-Sunmark, Hans Grydehoej. “Solar heating as an energy source within the mining industry has a great future due to both economic and environmental benefits,” he states in a press release.
Peñoles, Mexico’s second largest mining company, is also in the process of building a 199.5 MW wind farm. Once completed, it will be the biggest wind farm in the mining industry to date.
