AngloGold Ashanti (AGA), has released its 2022 Sustainability Report, in which it outlines its plan to achieve net-zero Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. As part of this plan, the company aims to achieve a 30% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2030, as compared to 2021. The targeted reduction aims to see emissions from the company’s operations fall to about 1 Mt by the end of the decade.
To achieve the targeted reductions, the company intends to utilize a combination of renewable energy projects, fleet electrification, and lower-emission power sources. It plans to implement scoped out initiatives across its business units to achieve this goal.
Approximately 60% of the planned emissions reductions will come from large renewable energy projects, including wind and solar projects. The company is also investigating the viability of battery electric vehicles, dual-fuel trucks, and wind farms at various sites.
To achieve the targeted reductions over the next eight years, the company anticipates a capital cost of around $1.1 billion, of which $350 million will be funded by AGA, and the remaining $750 million will come from third-party funding, including the providers of renewable energy infrastructure.
