BHP And Chinese Copper Producers Sign MoU For Collaborating On The Copper Value Chain

BHP, China Copper, and Daye Nonferrous have signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to collaborate in developing a sustainable and responsible copper value chain to support the global energy transition. China Copper and Daye Nonferrous are two of China’s leading copper producers.

The parties aim to jointly explore opportunities to reduce the environmental footprint and improve energy and materials efficiency in copper production. They also plan to develop innovative technology for copper smelting and refining, such as the use of low-carbon emission fuels; recycling of byproducts such as slag, dust, waste water and acid; and digitalization of copper value chain processes.

Furthermore, the collaboration seeks to improve traceability along the copper value chain and enhance measurement, verification, and reporting.

The non-exclusive nature of the partnership aims to enable further similar collaborations with industry peers and downstream users.

BHP’s Chief Commercial Officer, Vandita Pant, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving more sustainable and responsible copper supply, particularly in supporting the megatrends of decarbonization and electrification.

China Copper Chairman, Xu Bo, noted that the MoU signing will increase the depth and breadth of cooperation between the two companies, while CNMC Daye Chairman, Wang Yan, emphasized the need for an open, global platform to explore and share new technologies and insights in copper smelting and refining.
