Sandvik Wins $63M Order, Including For BEVs, From Torex Gold

Sandvik, a Swedish engineering company, has received a significant order worth approximately SEK 650 million (US$63 million) from Torex Gold Resources, a Canadian mining company. The order comprises 35 mining equipment units, including 15 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and 20 conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) equipment units, for Torex’s Media Luna project in Mexico.

This marks Sandvik’s first BEV order in Latin America and its third-largest battery-electric mining fleet order to date. The equipment deliveries are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2023 and continue until the fourth quarter of 2025.

Torex plans to bring Media Luna into commercial production in early 2025, with output ramping up to 7,500 metric tons per day by 2027, creating one of Mexico’s largest underground mines. The company is implementing battery-electric production equipment as part of a broader decarbonization strategy.

Mats Eriksson, the President of Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions, commented that the milestone order demonstrated that it is possible for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) mining equipment to coexist in underground mines and provide value in different situations and applications.
