Caterpillar And NMG Sign MoUs For Mining Equipment And Battery Material

Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. (NMG) and Caterpillar Inc. have signed definitive agreements to provide an integrated solution, including zero-exhaust emission heavy mining equipment, infrastructure, and services, for NMG’s Matawinie Mine in Canada.

Caterpillar will supply NMG with its Cat zero-exhaust emission machines as they become available, supporting NMG’s transition to sustainable mining practices.

Furthermore, a unique approach has been established between NMG and Caterpillar’s Job Site Solutions to decrease the Matawinie Mine’s initial capital outlay on mining machinery. This solution involves paying an hourly fee based on equipment usage and comes with asset management assistance to enhance efficiency, uptime, and predictability.

Therefore, Caterpillar, together with Toromont Industries Ltd., an authorized Cat dealer, will manage the maintenance and repair strategy for the equipment to maximize machine availability. NMG will also have the opportunity to lease or acquire machines if desired, through Toromont.

Furthermore, NMG and Caterpillar have signed a non-binding offtake memorandum of understanding to collaborate on NMG’s active anode material, which could be used in Caterpillar’s battery supply chain for electrifying heavy vehicles.

“Through this offtake MoU, a full circular value chain could be established whereas NMG would supply carbon-neutral graphite materials to Caterpillar for the development of its secure, resilient, and sustainable battery supply chain that would serve to electrify heavy vehicles, including NMG’s Matawinie fleet,” said a statement from NMG.

The collaboration aims to advance responsible mining practices and global decarbonization.
