OZ Minerals To Trial Triple Road Train Powered By Electric Semi

Janus Electric, in partnership with Oz Minerals and Qube, will trial a converted electric semi pulling a triple road train (three trailers) on a 12-month journey through South Australia’s outback between Port Augusta and Carrapateena.

The semi will be powered by zero-emission technology that was developed by Janus Electric to meet the heavy hauling requirements of the mining industry amidst the need for decarbonization.

A recharging and replacement station has already been set up at Port Augusta in South Australia, allowing for the batteries to be charged using renewable energy and swapped out for optimal efficiency.

It only takes up to five minutes to replace the batteries, and the Janus Electric system is compatible with any prime mover, regardless of its brand. Additionally, retrofitting diesel trucks to use Janus Electric technology costs about the same as overhauling a diesel engine after driving 300,000 miles.

The truck is equipped with an electric drivetrain that delivers high power and torque, enabling it to transport loads weighing up to 165 tonnes (a triple road train). It can travel a distance of 200-400 km (125-250 miles) on a single charge.

The trial is a key step in reducing emissions in the heavy transport and resources industries, and would demonstrate that electric semis can operate effectively in harsh mining conditions.
