Ballard Power Systems, a clean energy company, has received a purchase order from First Mode for 60 hydrogen fuel cell modules, totaling 6 megawatts, to be delivered in 2024. This order expands the existing relationship between the two companies, which began with an order of 35 modules earlier in 2023, aimed at powering hybrid hydrogen and battery ultra-class mining haul trucks.
The partnership between Ballard and First Mode provides a zero-emission alternative to diesel in mine haulage by combining hydrogen fuel cell and battery technology.
Ultra-class haul trucks used in mining operations have high energy requirements and need to meet strict uptime metrics. Ballard’s fuel cell modules, integrated into First Mode’s nuGen™ solution, offer the necessary duty cycle performance for mining operators.
According to Julian Soles, CEO of First Mode, the integration of hydrogen fuel cell and battery technology has demonstrated its effectiveness as a feasible emission-free substitute for diesel in mine haulage.
First Mode has commenced the integration of Ballard’s fuel cells based on the prior orders, and is now in the process of ramping production for the next iteration of the nuGen™ solution. This expansion involves the incorporation of fuel cell and battery powerplant technologies, along with the necessary infrastructure.
