Developed to generate electricity for the mine’s accommodation village and airport, the six-hectare, 3MW solar farm will also divert surplus energy to Cannington’s mining and processing operations.
Rowena Smith, South32’s chief sustainability officer, commented that the principal drivers for the adoption of renewable energy at the mine are the reduced price of renewable technologies and the lowered fuel costs resulting from their adoption, making the project an economically viable solution.
