The Energy Commission in Ghana said it wants to implement an initiative that would urge mining companies to produce a percentage of their own power for operations as well as purchase a specified amount of renewable energy.
The move could begin as soon as the end of this year. The initiative is part of the country’s larger goal to reach a 10% renewable energy target by 2020.
So far, mining companies have expressed caution and concern over the proposal, Energy Commission’s Director of Technical Regulations, Dr. Nii Darko Asante, told Africa’s Business & Financial Times.
